چکیده
Abstract The drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) in the developing countries urgently need an efficient pre-treatment for nitrate (NO 3 − ) removal to cope with increasing NO pollution raw water. An upflow sludge blanket (USB) reactor applied from domestic wastewater may be adopted by DWTPs. However, studies on optimal carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C/N) and operation of USB at short hydraulic retention times (HRT) high-rate polluted are lacking. In this study, we first investigated C/N biological a sequencing batch (SBR). was then operated pre-treating synthetic contaminated (40 mg N L 1 monitor performance examine opportunities reducing HRT. After operating SBR designed 4, 2 g C N, selected as due lower carbon breakthrough nitrite accumulation SBR. achieved complete longer time when compared that (10 d). high specific denitrification rate (18.7 ± 3.6 mixed liquor volatile suspended solids h suggested possible HRT reduction 36 min. We successfully demonstrated removal, which could promising technology DWTPs pre-treat sources .

Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (uasb) Reactor in Wastewater Treatment
Under anaerobic conditions, organic pollutants in wastewater are degraded by microbes producing methane and carbon dioxide. The degradation process is effective compared to the more conventional aerobic processes and produces only 5-10% of sludge. This saves considerably on cost associated with the sludge disposal. Among anaerobic technologies, the most popular ones is the upflow anaerobic slud...
متن کاملModelling of an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket reactor
A model describing both physical and biological processes in Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactors was developed. The main objective of the modelling was to take into account the transient growth of the microorganisms from the start-up of the reactor until a steady state is reached. In addition, the model considers the degradation of the substrate and its reaction with the biomass, wh...
متن کاملPerformance Evaluation of Hybrid Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Reactor in the Treatment of Dairy Waste Water
Dairy industries have shown tremendous growth in size and number in most countries of the world. These industries discharge wastewater which is characterized by high chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, nutrients, and organic and inorganic contents. Such wastewaters, if discharged without proper treatment, severely pollute receiving water bodies. For treatment of dairy waste water,...
متن کاملEnhanced lipid degradation in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor by integration with an acidogenic reactor.
Lipids inhibition and their degradation in dairy wastewater treatment were investigated in this study. A two-phase system, composed of an acidogenic continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) and a methanogenic upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, was compared with the single-phase system of a conventional UASB reactor. The systems were operated up to an organic loading rate of 8.09 g ...
متن کاملBiological denitrification of brines from membrane treatment processes using an upflow sludge blanket (USB) reactor.
This paper investigates denitrification of brines originating from membrane treatment of groundwater in an upflow sludge blanket (USB) reactor, a biofilm reactor without carrier. A simulated brine wastewater was prepared from tap water and contained a nitrate concentration of 125 mg/l as N and a total salt concentration of about 1%. In order to select for a suitable energy source for denitrific...
